Microsoft Software Update Services

  • What is SUS?

Microsoft Software Update Services (SUS) is designed to greatly simplify the process of keeping computers up to date with the latest critical updates, security updates, and service packs.

  • My machine rebooted on its own.

Domain policy is now set to instruct your machine to check for updates every night at 3 am.  The policy turns ON the Automatic Updates feature of Windows.  If your machine is not on at 3 am, then when your machine is turned on it will check for updates immediately.  If the updates require a reboot, then the machine will reboot within 5-10 minutes of being on.

  • Why is this system needed?

Security, security, and security! This is just another building block in the defense in depth philosophy.  With this automated process UCC can provide consistent security to over 2000 UNO-domain machines without labor intensive sweeps.

  • Can I still get to Windows Update the same way I did before SUS?

Yes, you can still get to Windows Update the same way you did before to download “Optional software updates” and “Optional hardware updates”.  The SUS project will ensure your machine has the “High Priority Updates” installed.

  • What if I do not want my machine to be in the SUS project?

If your machine has specific requirements that prohibit occasional reboots for mission critical projects, please e-mail {using your UNO-email account]  Helpdesk@uno.edu with your name, machine name, dept, POC info, and reason.  We will remove your machine from the policy. However, please remember that your machine may be vulnerable until critical patches/updates are manually installed.

  • I see icons on my toolbar that mention updates and reboots.

These icons indicate actions in the background or are friendly reminders that an update is complete.
