Computrace General Information:

Computrace is a silent, background program that will periodically report your laptop’s (PC or Mac) current IP address (internet location) to Computrace’s database in order to deter theft and help recover laptops stolen from the university.  It does not monitor email, webpage history, instant message chats, downloads, or any other user activity.  It is a required purchase for all new laptops, pursuant to the Chancellor’s AP 5.05 (PDF).

Purchasing Information

Please visit the following website to pick laptops in compliance with AP 5.05.  You have to pay for Computrace.

Installation

When you first receive your laptop, Property Control will ask you to connect it to the internet to make sure Computrace is correctly installed and reporting.  If it is not installed and or reporting, Property Control will inform you (by email) and ask you to visit one of the links below in order to install the Computrace software (UNO Username@uno.edu and Password are required) :

      1. PC:  http://ucc.uno.edu/facstaff/progroup/computrace.cfm
      2. MAC:  http://ucc.uno.edu/facstaff/progroup/computraceMac.cfm

The initial connection to the internet (or the first connection after Computrace is installed) is very important and should be accomplished within 48 hours of receiving a new laptop.

25 day notice

Computrace requires each laptop to connect to the internet at least once every 25 days (any active internet connection at UNO or elsewhere will work).  In the event that your laptop does not connect in 25 days, you and your supervisor will begin receiving daily email reminders from Computrace asking you to connect your laptop to the internet as soon as possible.  Occasionally, a laptop may connect to the internet, but not be able to report in to Computrace’s database.  If you believe you are receiving emails about a laptop which has been connected to the internet within the previous 25 days, please try the following steps:

  1. Double-check the computer’s tag numbers (serial, service tag, UNO tag) and compare them with the numbers referenced in the email’s attached spreadsheet.  Many users (and supervisors) have multiple machines assigned under their name.
  2. Ensure that the computer is connected to the internet and can load webpages (try browsing to a commonly used webpage such as www.google.com or www.cnn.com).
  3. Leave the computer connected to the internet for 15-25 minutes to make sure that Computrace’s software has time to connect.
  4. Try reinstalling the software.  Simply follow the instructions for installing the software on the links listed above; however, you may skip the parts about entering a Purchase Order number.

If you continue to receive daily emails and have followed the above steps, contact the UNO Help Desk at 280-4357.

Missing/Stolen Laptops

If you cannot find a laptop that has Computrace installed and think that it may be missing or stolen, please contact UNO Help Desk for assistance in locating the machine at 280-4357.   If you are certain that the laptop has been stolen, please immediately contact the UNO Police Department (280-6666) and any other relevant local
law enforcement.
