Frequently Asked Questions - Email

What do I do with unfiltered Spam messages?

Please forward a copy of the spam message along with full internet headers to our Spam team at abuse@frontbridge.com. One spam message per submission, please. Submitting a group of messages in an attachment is not the best way as much of the original spam message can be lost.

The Spam filter caught a legitimate piece of email. What do I do?

Please forward a copy of the message along with full internet headers to our False Positive team at false_positive@frontbridge.com. They will review the message and adjust our filters where needed to prevent the exact message from being tagged as spam moving forward.

How do I access my e-mail?

Students - To access your e-mail, you must use Outlook Web Access or "OWA." To avoid potential problems, always use Internet Explorer when accessing OWA. It does not matter which one you select, however if the one you select is not availiable, you will be prompted to select another. You will then be promted for your username and password. This is your LAN username and password, the same ones you use for the network and for Blackboard. For more detailed information on using OWA, please see the OWA instruction page.

Faculty/Staff - Faculty and Staff may use Microsoft Outlook to access their E-mail when on Campus. For more information on setting up Outlook for the Exchange Server, please read the Outlook Setup Instructions. When off campus, or if you prefer not to use Outlook, Faculty and Staff may also use OWA. For more information of using OWA, please see the OWA instruction page.

What is my email password?

Your e-Mail password is the same as your LAN password. You can obtain your intial LAN password by visiting http://useraccount.uno.edu. Students can also obtain all their passwords in person, by coming to the Student Technology Fee Lab Help Desk, located in the Computer Center, Room 101-R, with a picture ID.

How big of a file can I send through email?

There is a limit of 25 megabytes for any single message, including its attachments.  If the attachments are non-text files (like work processing, spreadsheet, or graphics documents), the attachments will be converted to "text" thereby increasing the message size by about 40%.  Therefore, 17.5 Megabytes could be the actual a maximum size.  The amount of already used e-mail disk quota also affects the maximum message size of sent messages.

Does my password change each semester?

Since your e-mail password is the same as you LAN password, it will expire every six (6) months. When you change your LAN password, your e-mail password will change along with it.

How much space do I have on my email account?

Each e-mail category of e-mail account has a three-fold threshold organization.

Students - 800mb/900mb/1.0gb

Faculty/staff - 800mb/900mb/1.0gb

When your e-mail disk quota usage crosses the first threshold, you will automatically receive a message about getting close to exhausting your disk quota.  When the usage crosses the second threshold, you will automatically receive a secondary message and will no longer be able to send messages.  When the usage crosses the third threshold, you will automatically receive a last message and will no longer be able to send or receive messages.

What do I do if I am being harassed through e-mail?

Email harassment is a violation of UNO's General User Policies and will result in loss of use. Forward the offending email to abuse@uno.edu for follow up.

What do I do if I can't open an attachment?

Check the ending of the file name. Every file will have an extention or suffix that represents the program that created the file. For example, a file created in Microsoft Word would be saved as: example.doc.

If the computer you are using does not have the program installed that the file needs to open it, then you will not be able to open the file.

How do I forward my UNO e-mail to another address?

UNO does not encourage forwarding e-mail messages because of the possibility of your not receiving the forwarded messages. If you understand the risks involved and still want to forward your messages, you can find forwarding instructions athttp://ucc.uno.edu/mail/forward_Exchange_mail.cfm
