The name of your computer account (i.e., your username) identifies you to the computer system that you want to use. The password associated with your username makes sure that is precisely you seeking to the files stored in you account. Your password is similar to your PIN associated with your bank account. Your password and PIN offer a level of security so that only you can access your account. For this reason, it is unwise to share your password (or PIN) with any one else.
Another level of security is that passwords expire periodically, like every six months. Some computer installation expire passwords monthly. Expiring password helps to prevent computer hackers form guessing your password by allowing less time for guessing.
A third level of password security involves the way password are constructed. Using a password that is easy to guess offers little security. Using your username as your password, offers no security at all. A good password should be something that is easy to remember, easily typed--preferably without looking at the keyboard--and not easily associated with you. There are some guidelines for choosing a good password.
All accounts share the same username and initial password. You can obtain the password for your LAN/Blackboard/WebStar/e-mail account by visiting the web page http://useraccount.uno.edu and clicking the link of the first paragraph. Students can also obtain all their passwords in person by visiting the Help Desk in room 101-R of the Computer Center with a picture ID.
How
many passwords do I have?
All
students start with two (2) passwords, one for Blackboard/E-mail/LAN/SharePoint/WebStar
and one for PPP. Your LAN account password is the same password
you will use to access Blackboard, E-mail, SharePoint, and WebStar.
Changing the Blackboard/E-mail/LAN/SharePoint/WebStar
password does not change the PPP password. To change
the PPP password,
you can call the Help Desk at (504) 280-HELP (4357) or visit the Help Desk (CC-101-R) with a picture ID. We will NOT request or change any password via email. You will never receive an email from UNO or UCC asking for password or account information.
Your
initial WebStar password is the same as your LAN/Blackboard/e-mail password.
Does my password change each semester?
Blackboard/E-mail/LAN/SharePoint/WebStar
passwords expire every 6 months. When using the Student Technology
Fee Labs, you will be prompted upon log-in to change your password
fourteen (14) days before it expires. Blackboard will not warn
you before your password expires, nor will WebStar; however, your
Exchange e-mail will warn you fourteen (14) days before your password
expires with an extra "bar" in the OWA window. You will also receive an email seven (7) days prior to your password expiration date.
How do I get Library Database passwords?
When accessing Library reference material, you may be
requested to provide your UNO e-mail address (username@uno.edu) in order to
receive your request. The material (whether library passwords or documents)
will then be e-mailed to your UNO e-mail account almost immediately.
LAN - You will be requested to change your LAN account password when you log on to the LAN for the first time from an on-campus computer. However, if at anytime you are on a UNO domain computer and would like to change your password, press Ctrl-Alt-Delete and click on the Change Password button. You may also visit the UCC Help Desk, with a photo ID, to have your password changed.
If you are off campus and would like to change your UNEXPIRED password yourself, please visit http://useraccount.uno.edu and click the link of the second paragraph to register your account. Then return to that same page and click the link of the third paragraph to change the password. Remember that passwords are CASE SENSITIVE and that you must wait 5 minutes before attempting to use the new password. Passwords endure for 180 days (i.e., six months).
If you do remember your password, even if it is expired, visit the page http://useraccount.uno.edu and click the link in the fourth paragraph.
Blackboard - Your Blackboard password changes with your LAN account.
E-mail - Your E-mail password changes with your LAN account.
PPP - A PPP account password can only be changed by the Help Desk.
Please contact the Student Technology Fee Lab Help Desk (280-HELP) or come by
the Computer Center, Room 101R with a picture I.D.
SharePoint - Your SharePoint password changes with your LAN account.
WebSTAR - Your WebSTAR password changes with your LAN account.
