Frequently Asked Questions - Wireless Internet Connection Tips

There are free Wireless Internet connection available in the following locations: UCC (University Computing and Communications) Building, Earl K. Long Library, Engineering Building, and the University Center. If you are unable to connect to a wireless access point, here are some basic troubleshooting tips that may help.

  1. Make sure that your wireless card is installed or your built in wireless device is turned on.  Some laptops have a wireless switch or button on the front or side rim.  While other laptops can be turned on and off by holding down the “Fn” key and the “F2” key simultaneously.  The button or switch usually has a wi-fi.jpg symbol on it.

  2. If you have connected to the UNO wireless, but unable to browse to any webpage. These are some things to try: Click the start button>Run>type CMD>type IPCONFIG If your IP address shows as 137.X.X.X, then you are connected. If your IP address shows as 169.X.X.X, then you are not connected.

  3. Be sure you have an active antivirus software installed, and your virus definitions are up to date.

  4. Most wireless devices have a monitoring tool that indicates the signal strength of your wireless connection.  Check the signal to make sure that you have at least 2 bars.
