The hours of the Computer Center Labs vary throughout the year. Please
the current hours of operation. The labs are located in the Computer
Center, room 101-R and in the Library room first floor. There are
other labs that are available around campus, but are not maintained
by the UCC. You will need to consult those labs to for open hours.
Labs that are not maintained by the UCC may have different software
than the computers in the UCC labs. Also, the procedure to access network-wide
resources may be different in the other labs. Students should be aware
that computers sometimes break, malfunction or otherwise may be unavailable
for use at all scheduled hours; therefore, students should not wait
until the last minute to complete assignments that require computer
use. Click here to
get more information about the labs that are available on campus.

A Local Area Network, or LAN, is a collection of personal computers
interconnected by a network in order to share resources such as software
and printers. Be aware that your LAN password automatically expires
every six months. Because a LAN can also connect to other computer
systems such as the World Wide Web, it can provide access to other
resources.

The LAN account will allow students to log in and use personal computers
located in labs across campus. These labs offer: Microsoft Word, a
word processor you can use to write papers; Microsoft Excel, a spreadsheet
application to compute numbers and create charts and graphs; Microsoft
PowerPoint, a presentation application to create slide shows and presentations;
and Microsoft Access, a database management application to store, analyze
and retrieve data. These personal computers also provide Internet access
and other software. For a detailed list of the software located in
the computer labs click here.
Because the Outlook Web Mail, Blackboard, WebSTAR, and SharePoint systems use the same LAN
username/password information, student and employees use their LAN
credentials to access these systems. E-mail allows you
to send and receive messages with other users. Blackboard allows instructors
to disseminate course materials to students. WebStar allows students
to register for courses, review class schedules, pay fees, and review
grades of previous terms. WebStar allows employees to review their
payroll summaries and other employee benefits. Additionally, WebStar
allows instructors to review their teaching schedule and class rosters
as well as allow them to enter mid-term and final grades.

- If the computer is not already on, turn on the computer by pushing
the power button, which is usually located on the front of the computer.
- After the computer boots up, it will prompt you to press CTRL+ALT+DEL
to log on. This means you should press and hold all three keys simultaneously.
- The computer should remind you to make sure that the Caps Lock is
off, and you can proceed to the log on screen by pressing the enter
key.
- At the login information prompt, use the tab key to navigate between
the text boxes. Type your username into the username field.
- Next, tab to the password field and enter the password you received
from TOPS. The LAN is case sensitive so be sure to enter your initial
password in all capital (upper case) letters. You will not see the
password, but asterisks will represent the characters.
- Finally, pick which domain you want to use. The log onto field should
say UNO-DOMAIN. If not, use the mouse to click on the small down arrow
to the right of the field. This should list all of the available domains.
Select UNO-DOMAIN by clicking on it. Then, Press enter.

There are several scenarios:
-
If you have not yet registered your account through the Self Service Password Reset and your password is not expired, then you can visit http://useraccount.uno.edu and click the second link to register your account, visit the same page a second time, and use the third link to change the password.
-
If you have previously registered your account through the Self Service Password Reset, then you can visit http://useraccount.uno.edu and click the third link to change the password.
-
If you know your password, but it is expired, you can visit http://useraccount.uno.edu and click the fourth link.
- If none of the previous scenarios match your situation, you can contact the Help Desk by e-mail (helpdesk@uno.edu) or by phone at (504) 280-HELP and be ready to supply the following information: your full name, username, student number, birth date, and the last four digits of your social security number.

Printouts can be picked-up at the I/O counter in CC 101-R and the first floor of the library. You MUST present a picture ID when picking up printouts from
the student computer labs.

It is very important that you log out completely from your LAN account
when you are finished. If you leave your account open on the computer,
someone else could use your account and you could lose all of your
files. When you have finished your LAN session, exit all programs and
close all open windows. Click the Start button again, move the mouse
pointer up and over to Log Off and click. Select the option "Log Off".

PPP stands for Point-to-Point Protocol and it is used by the modem
pool to access the Internet via dial-up telephone lines. At UNO, PPP
accounts are provided to all students, faculty, and staff. Please see
the FAQ section on PPP for more information. PPP

Your e-mail address is simply your LAN username followed by the designation "@uno.edu", meaning you are at (@) the University of New Orleans ("uno"),
which is an educational institution (".edu").
to top
There are a number of ways to access the UNO email system. The simplest
is through OWA (i.e., Outlook Web Access) on the World Wide Web.
-
Open a web browser (Microsoft Internet Explorer, version 6 or
higher).
-
Go to the Outlook Webmail Access site (http://owa.uno.edu/).
-
Type in your LAN username and password and click OK. OWA will appear.
-
The message list will show you the emails that you have received.
To read a message, double-click on the desired one to open the
message. To close the message widow, click the close button at
the upper right corner of the message window.
-
To delete a message, select it in the message list and click the delete tool (pictured as a "X") of the OWA toolbar.
Note: Deleting a message moves it from the
Inbox folder to the Deleted Items folder.
SPECIAL NOTE: Deleting a message from the Deleted
Items folder removes the message from your mailbox.
-
To compose a message, click the New Message button. The To: box
is where to put the full email address of the person to whom you
are sending the message. The Cc: box is used to send a "carbon
copy" of the message to another recipient. The Subject: box
is for a brief statement concerning the topic of the email. Beneath
that is the box for the body of the message. There is also an Attachments
button for sending files with your message. Click the Send button
to send the message, or click the close button of the message window
to delete it.
-
To exit OWA, click on the Log Off button.
For more information about OWA, visit the page:

into UNO.
UCC offers "How-To" documents on the
web at:

Users who have difficulty configuring their PPP account may obtain
support from the UCC
Help Desk.

Using OWA is perhaps the easiest way to access your e-mail. Go to the UNO home page (http://www.uno.edu) and click on the e-mail link located beneath the picture.
You can also use Netscape Mail Messenger or Microsoft Outlook. To
configure Mail Messenger or Outlook to check your UNO e-mail, use the
following e-mail preferences:
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server: smtpa.uno.edu
Incoming Mail (POP3) Server: pop.uno.edu
(note: please remember to select to leave a copy of email messages on the server)

Students using an Internet Service Provider other that UNO are invited
to review the "How do I...?" Library web page at http://library.uno.edu/help/off.html .
Note that some databases and electronic journal required special passwords
regardless of the kind of access that is used. In such case, visit
the above mentioned library web page.
UNO Computer Policies are available on-line here.
The first and foremost rule to remember is never share your account
with anyone. Do not give anyone your password. Never leave a computer
unattended while still logged in, and always log out completely (turning
off a computer does not log you off). These actions will protect you
from someone else abusing your account. You are responsible for everything
that happens with your account.

The UNO Technology Fee provides all students with 100MB of Personal
Storage space. Personal Storage follows you from machine to machine
and lab to lab and is preserved on a nightly backup schedule. Personal storage
is accessed either as an "I-drive" from "My Computer" or
from a desktop folder.
Your first source of help is the student lab assistant. You can also
visit the UCC Help Desk located in CC 101-R, call at 280-HELP
(4357), or e-mail helpdesk@uno.edu.
The Help Desk hours are posted in the Computer Center and on-line here.

If you forget your password, the staff at the Help Desk can change
it and allow you to create a new one. You will need to bring photo ID. A UNO ID, a state ID or
driver's license is acceptable. You can also change your password at http://useraccount.uno.edu
